Cricket fans expected the clash between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday in Abu Dhabi to cause quite a stir, but the match ended one-sided. Kolkata registered a comfortable win against Bangalore and jumped to the fifth spot on the leaderboard. However, Bangalore is still in third place on the points table. KKR bowlers and openers guided their team to victory in their first match of the second leg of IPL 2021.

Bowling first, Eoin Morgan-led KKR bowlers blazed the guns to bundle out RCB for 92/9 in 19 overs. Varun Chakravarthy and Andrew Russell took three wickets each to restrict heavy batting RCB at less than 100. Varun Chakravarthy was awarded the player of the match for his mystery magical spell. Losing five wickets within 20 runs took the game away from RCB, and Virat said that it was a wake-up call for them. “We were 42 odd for one and then lost about five wickets within 20 runs, which is a very difficult situation to come back from. Bit of a collapse there for us, a bit of a wake-up call, and might as well have this at the start of the second leg so that we know exactly what we need to work on,” Kohli reflected after the match. Virat did not hesitate to appreciate KKR’s Varun Chakravarthy, who finished 3/13 in his four overs. “Pretty good, that’s exactly what I was saying in the dug-out; he’s going to be a key factor when he plays for India. We need to see performances like these from all the youngsters so that the bench strength of Indian cricket stays strong,” Kohli added. KKR openers Shubman Gill and debutant Venkatesh Iyer gave the team a flying start to wrap up the game in ten overs.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) will play their first match in the second phase of IPL 2021 in Dubai on Tuesday. Both teams look alike in many aspects, both on paper and on the leaderboard. Notably, both sides are spearheaded by young wicketkeeper captains. KL Rahul-led Punjab Kings are presently placed at sixth position with three wins from eight matches. Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals are at fifth spot with the same number of victories from seven games. It’s a must-win game for both sides to make their chances clear for the playoffs.
