IPL 2020 postponed to April 15 due to Coronavirus

IPL 2020 is postponed to April 15 due to Coronavirus. Because of the current context and the people worried about the spread of the new virus, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was forced to take action. The spokespersons announced that they want IPL fans to experience this event in optimal and safe conditions. Therefore, the 13th edition will not take place on March 29, as it was initially established.

President Sourav Ganguly, Secretary Jay Shah, and other BCCI’s spokespersons will work on this situation with the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to solve this major inconvenience. They must take into consideration the possible worsening of the situation. Also, it is possible and highly desired that the spread of the Coronavirus to be kept under control or reduced in the following days. This would be an ideal situation.

Overseas players that want to participate in the Indian Premier League have a temporary problem. Their visas are still being processed or rejected. However, if the tournament will be held on April 15, then there is enough time for this problem to be solved. Moreover, IPL can’t take place without overseas players. This is an important condition that must be considered.

In a scenario in which the IPL would take place behind closed doors, BCCI has to choose two possible options. The league’s format could be changed to fit into a smaller window. Also, the tournament could be played in two or three venues so that air travel wouldn’t be necessary. However, some states, such as Delhi, are not willing to host this event. This is a problematic aspect.

The IPL governing council held a meeting with the eight franchises on Saturday (March 14) 2020 and reportedly came up with five dates on which the league can start. According to the New Indian Express, the five dates are April 15, April 21, April 25, May 1 and May 5.

In one month, BCCI must rethink and solve the situation. In this regard, depending on the evolution of the present situation, changes may occur, and certain decisions can be changed.
