BCCI Suspends VIVO IPL 2021 for time being after an SRH player tests positive

The pandemic that continues to ravage the country, has also touched the bio-secure haven that is IPL. The crisis has worsened after a few players and the ground staff tested positive for the virus. On Monday, the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers Bangalore had been rescheduled because the KKR players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier had tested COVID positive. The Chennai franchise had also announced that their bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji and a support staff member had tested positive earlier this week. They had also informed the BCCI that they will not play their next match in New Delhi on Wednesday against the Rajasthan Royals. Adhering to the IPL’s Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP), CSK told the BCCI that they could return to the field only after all players who came into contact with the two people who tested positive cleared three tests over a six-day span. Ahead of the match between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Mumbai Indians, the player Wriddhiman Saha from the SRH squad tested positive, and reportedly the whole team is in isolation since yesterday. According to the sources, the bowler Amit Mishra from the Delhi Capitals team has also tested positive.

The alarming increase in the number of cases has not only made it difficult for the games to continue but also has put the other players at risk of getting infected. Owing to the string of events, the VIVO IPL 2021 has been reportedly suspended.

Confirming the same, the BCCI Vice President, Rajeev Shukla said:

“The IPL has been suspended for time being. We spoke to everyone from teams, broadcasters, and all those who were involved in it. It was decided to defer the IPL especially looking at the sentiment and current situation in the country. For us players’ health is paramount and BCCI will always keep safety first. We will meet again soon and decide when we can conclude this edition, we will have to see when is the next window available”
